In many cultures, rice plays a ceremonial role in rituals of purification and abundance. Inspired by the symbolic figure of the scarecrow—the silent guardian of the rice fields—the costumes are crafted using natural-toned fabrics and materials, evoking an earthy, grounded presence that connects the performers with the land.

The design draws inspiration from traditional Chinese opera attire, particularly the structure of “Da Yi Ku” (打衣褲), reinterpreted to create a contemporary dialogue between East and West, tradition and transformation. The extended sleeves echo the poetic choreography of sign language developed in collaboration with Laboratorio Silenzio, resembling the gentle swaying of rice stalks in the wind.

The neutral color palette was carefully chosen to reflect the inclusive and adaptable spirit of JOYY!’s ongoing vision—allowing the costumes to be reimagined in future contexts while staying rooted in the cultural significance of rice.
